Toothache Dentist Grand Rapids, MI

Toothaches can mean anything, from infected dental pulp to food stuck between your teeth. Remain calm until you know the cause of your dental discomfort.

You can relieve many small toothaches by rinsing your mouth and flossing. If the pain is severe or lasts for more than a day, schedule an appointment with our emergency dentist.

Here's what else you need to know about toothaches.

How to Relieve Toothaches

While you’re waiting to see our Grand Rapids emergency dentist, there are ways to manage pain. The best way to ease toothache pain is to stay ahead of it. Take over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or numbing dental gel.

If your child has a toothache, read the label to make sure they are old enough to receive that medication. Keep your head elevated while you sleep and use a cold compress to further manage pain.

If your toothache persists for more than a day, don’t ignore it. Untreated oral infections could lead to dental abscesses and other serious problems.

If the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected, it could even cause the tooth to die and fall out. Under these circumstances, Dr. Dodds may recommend an emergency root canal.

It's vital that you receive emergency dental care as soon as possible. Otherwise, the condition causing your dental pain will only worsen with time.

Causes of Toothaches

During your appointment, Dr. Dodds will diagnose and treat the source of your dental pain.

Here are some common reasons for toothaches:

  • Food stuck between teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Infected tooth pulp
  • Cracked tooth
  • Loose filling
  • Receding gum line
